Letter | Redrawn maps fail voters, and Latinos
Jeremie Dufault - State Representative, 15th Legislative District
I represented the 15th Legislative District in the state House of Representatives from 2019 until 2022. That’s when its boundaries were redrawn to create a 52% voting-age Latino district.
Although the new boundaries took me out of the district, they did bring in Republican Nikki Torres of Pasco, who went on to become the area’s first Latina state senator.
Now a judge has changed the boundaries again, supposedly to bring the district in line with the federal Voting Rights Act.
But the new district decreases — not increases — the percentage of voting-age Latinos in the district from 52% to 51%. And it cuts out Nikki Torres, the district’s popular Latina senator.
How does that help Latinos?
Hopefully, the Supreme Court will reject this political shell game.
